Thai top three mobile operators cleared for 3G auction
09 октября 2012 |
Units of Thailand's three largest mobile phone operators are qualified to participate in the upcoming licence auction for the 2.1 gigahertz spectrum, used to provide third-generation mobile services, the National Broadcasting & Telecommunications Commission said.
Advanced Info Service PCL, Total Access Communication PCL, and True Move, a unit of True Corp PCL, will take part via their wholly owned subsidiaries in the auction, slated for Oct. 16, NBTC Vice Chairman Settapong Malisuwan told a news conference.
The regulator will offer a total of 45 megahertz of bandwidth at the auction.
It has set a reserve price of 4.5 billion baht ($147 million) for every 5
megahertz of bandwidth at the upcoming auction, in which analysts expect each
of the three bidders to get 15 mhz bandwidth.
The auction
is an important step toward the liberalization of the Thai telecommunications
industry, and will give the winners direct access to 3G frequencies for the
first time, eliminating the need to pay high concession fees to state firms to
use their networks.
Thailand's private mobile phone operators currently operate their businesses
under concessions granted by TOT PCL, formerly the Telephone Organization of
Thailand, and CAT Telecom PCL, formerly Communications Authority of Thailand,
and are required to share top-line revenues with the state-owned firms.
