France Telecom's LION2 cable goes live
16 апреля 2012 |
France Telecom-Orange announced last week that the LION2 (Lower Indian Ocean Network) submarine cable system connecting parts of Africa to international backbone networks has been switched on.
The cable provides for the first time broadband connectivity to Mayotte, a small French island located between Madagascar and the coast of Mozambique that has a population of around 200,000, according to the World Bank. France Telecom said LION2 provides residents of Mayotte with access to broadband services that have a comparable performance to those found in Europe.LION2 also provides Kenya with another landing station, built at Nyali near Kenya's second city Mombasa.
France Telecom reiterated the cable's importance to Kenya, noting that it will serve the country's capacity requirements for years to come.
"In addition, the new cable also provides an alternative route for passing secure broadband transmissions through Europe and Asia for all African countries in which the [France Telecom] Group is located," said a statement from the operator.
First announced in September 2010, the LION2 system was built by a consortium that included Mauritius Telecom, Orange Madagascar, Telkom Kenya, Mauritius-based Emtel, SFR's Réunion unit Société Réunionnaise du Radiotéléphone, as well as the French incumbent.
€57 million was invested in the cable, with France Telecom and its subsidiaries contributing around €38 million of that total.
The 2,700 km cable system uses wavelength division multiplexing (WDM), which increases capacity by enabling multiple signals to be transmitted on a single optical fibre. The maximum potential capacity currently stands at 1.28 Tbps, although additional bandwidth can be added to LION2 in future without necessitating additional submarine work, said France Telecom.
LION2 follows the launch in late 2009 of the first LION cable system, which provided international broadband connectivity to Madagascar, Mauritius, and Réunion.
