T-Mobile, Vodafone Push for DVB-T Mobile TV in Germany
24 апреля 2008 |
T-Mobile and Vodafone are pushing to roll out digital video broadcasting terrestrial (DVB-T) mobile TV services in Germany, dealing a major blow to rival mobile TV technologies.
Broadband News reports that the two operators, Germany's largest players, plan to introduce DVB-T handsets in time for the start of the Euro 2008 football championship. Both Vodafone and T-Mobile have unveiled plans to launch DVB-T handsets from May 2008 as technological improvements have now made it possible to produce compact handsets with good reception, less power consumption, and no requirement for outside antennae.
Significance: Any widespread adoption of DVB-T will be a big blow to rival digital video broadcasting handheld (DVB-H). Technically, both standards are essentially similar and rely on the same fundamental principle. However, DVB-H is better suited for the handset domain and has been adopted by the European Union. Nevertheless, commercial considerations may play a bigger role. DVB-T channels are available free-to-air whereas the license holder for Germany's DVB-H, Mobile 3.0, wants to charge a monthly subscription.
